What are the top do’s and don’ts of the Operating Agreement?
1. Tracking IDs
- Do always include a Tracking ID in Amazon affiliate links that you post on the websites and social media platforms you included in your application. Watch this video from Simply Sal Finds to learn more about what tracking IDs are, how to use them, and how to create them (please note that the video link directs to the US Amazon Influencer Program, some features are country-specific and may not be available in Australia).
- Don’t forget to create new Tracking IDs if you are reapplying to the program. Make sure you revise the affiliate links on your websites and social media platforms with new Tracking IDs if your account was initially rejected for an operating agreement violation.
You can create a Tracking ID by logging in to your account in Associates Central and click on "Manage your Tracking ID“. When you create affiliate links, you’ll be prompted to include your Tracking ID.
2. Amazon Trademarks
- Do use logos, words and images correctly. These include Amazon customer reviews legally registered or established by use as representing Amazon. You can use Amazon trademarks when you display them on your site to promote Amazon products on an Amazon site and you include an affiliate link to that site.
- Don’t use the term Amazon or any variants or misspellings as an identifier. The term can’t be in your domain name, subdomain name, Store ID, username, group name, or other handle on any social media site. For example, the hypothetical domain name www.JensAmazonFinds.com is not allowed.
As we update our Trademark guidelines periodically, stay up to date on them to make sure you’re using Amazon Trademarks correctly. You can also see our list of trademarks here.
3. Sites and social channels
- Do keep your websites, social media channels, and mobile applications (we refer to all of these as “sites” in our Operating Agreement) that you use to drive traffic to Amazon updated in your account on Associates Central.
- Don’t add just the name of the social media site. For example, www.instagram.com/YourInstagramHandle is correct but www.instagram.com is not, and this can lead to closure of your account. Add your entire profile URL and not just the name of the site. Click here to update your websites on Associates Central.
4. Commissions
- Do earn from your followers that are outside of your immediate circle. Our goal is to have our associates refer new customers to Amazon. In return, you get commission income.
- Don’t expect commissions on purchases made by you, friends, or family. These are not eligible for bounties or commissions.
5. Offline linking
- Do drive traffic to Amazon from sites/accounts you own. Affiliate links can only be shared via your own websites, mobile app URLs, and social media accounts.
- Don’t share your affiliate links via email, PDF, SMS, MMS, printed material, DM, on the phone, via word of mouth or elsewhere.
6. Public websites and account
- Do make sure your social media, groups, websites and mobile app URLs are public. Content and posts should be viewable by non-followers.
- Don’t have password restrictions, private or non-fully functional sites. We accept the following social networks: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, TikTok and Twitch.tv.
7. Replicas and designer imitations
- Do try to use “shop the look”, “inspired by”, "looks for less“ or “similar to” when referring to products that evoke another style when sharing with your audience.
- Don’t include terms such as "dupe", "faux", "knockoff", or "lookalike" in connection with a brand, as well as promoting counterfeit products or ones that incorrectly display a designer's name, trademark or logo. You can describe a product as a “faux snakeskin bag” or “fake fur coat”, but you may not promote the sale of a “fake BRAND shirt” or “BRAND purse dupe” if the item is not produced by BRAND.
8. Copyrighted music
- Do ensure the music you’re using in your Amazon content is not copyrighted before posting. There are only a few cases where a song or piece of music is copyright free: Public domain music, music that falls under a Creative Commons license or licensed, royalty-free music. You can find music under a Creative Commons license or license royalty free music on sites like Epidemic Sound or Artlist.
- Don’t assume you can use music on Amazon. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram or YouTube license certain music for your use, but that doesn’t carry over to Amazon. You need to check if the music you’ve used is copyright-free before you post. If it’s not, add new music via one of the options above, or remove the music and voice over the content instead.
9. Disclosures
- Do tell your audience when you are sharing an affiliate link. You are required to disclose that you’re an Amazon Associate when you post links. Add something like “#ad” or #commissionsearned” to your post.
- Don’t try and hide your disclosure. It should be placed near your affiliate link or product review in a location that customers will notice easily.
